Policies and Regulations

Water is an essential and invaluable resource for the OLC Group. We have been making consistent efforts to eliminate the wasting of resources by purifying wastewater and promoting the use of reclaimed water on a voluntary basis since opening its first Theme Park to the public.
By introducing the latest cutting-edge systems, we take environmentally friendly measures at all stages of the life cycles of attractions and facilities, from design to introduction, repair, and replacement.
As rainfall conditions shift due to the impact of global warming-induced climate change, we expect the risk of natural disasters, including droughts, to increase.
Pursuant to our aim to use water resources effectively under the OLC Group Environmental Policy, we are promoting measures to reduce water intake as well as recycling water resources. By doing so, we seek to develop a long-term sustainable business foundation as we strive to fulfill our social responsibilities as a company that uses huge amounts of water.

The OLC Group Environmental Policy (Revised May 2022)

The OLC Group undertakes environmental activities in line with the OLC Group Environmental Policy.

Governance

The OLC Group’s Structures to Drainage Management System

The OLC Group has established an Environment Committee chaired by the Director of the Corporate Strategy Planning Division (Executive Director and Executive Officer). The committee is responsible for planning and setting targets for the Company’s environmental activities including climate change. Due to wide-ranging laws governing water supply and drainage*, the OLC Group Water Supply and Drainage Guidelines were established and the OLC Group is developing a system to facilitate the appropriate management of water supply and drainage operations accordingly. Through the Environment Committee, targets and plans regarding environment actions are reported to the Board of Directors annually. Recognizing environmental issues including climate change and water-related natural disasters as an important managerial challenge to be addressed, our Board of Directors resolved to set “Measures to address climate change and natural disasters” and “Recycling-oriented society” as areas of our ESG Materiality, and monitor the progress made in our related plans.

*Japan has various laws and regulations, including the Water Quality Pollution Control Act, the Water Supply Act, the Act on Maintenance of Sanitation in Buildings, and the Sewerage Service Act, which apply to the OLC Group companies on the basis of location and business type.

Metrics and Targets

In addition to our water resource recycling project, which we have been working on for many years at our water treatment facility, we are aiming to reduce our water intake* by 1% by FY2027 from the base year of FY2024. We will also set a long-term Group target by FY2027.

*Public water, well water, hot spring water, and industrial water

Water Purification and Recycling

Tokyo Disney Resort

Water treatment facility

The water used by the OLC Group is collected, purified, and recycled at a water treatment plant owned by the OLC Group, in order to reduce water use.
Today, the water we use at our Theme Parks and hotels is recycled at the OLC Group's water treatment plant and reused for toilet flushing at Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, and some of our hotels. In FY2023, through recycling, we produced 960 thousand m3 of utility water, which amounted to 19% of our total water intake.

Water circulates efficiently throughout Tokyo DisneySea

Water circulates efficiently throughout Tokyo DisneySea

We have placed filtration devices in areas and attractions containing water at our Theme Parks. These devices enable us to maintain water quality by conducting thorough checks and effectively circulating all water.
For example, the water contained in the vast water areas within Tokyo DisneySea is processed through a large-scale cycle filtration/purification system. Thanks to this system, we can efficiently maintain a consistent level of water by replenishing stocks on sunny days to make up for water lost to evaporation and we can also make adjustments to deal with overflows on rainy days. Clean water used for fountains pours into the bodies of water located throughout Tokyo DisneySea, allowing us to use water effectively without wasting any of it.

Our policy at Tokyo Disney Resort is to take water-saving measures whenever water supply/intake is restricted in our water catchment area.

Initiative example Outline
Water recycling We operate our own farm in Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture to produce large and mini tomatoes and bell peppers. The cultivation method we use is hydroponics, where we dissolve fertilizer in water sourced from a well and run the water through a pipe.
We filter and reuse the unabsorbed solution, reducing the use of well water by 20 to 30%.

Reducing Water Intake

At some employee cafeteria kitchens, we installed special water-saving taps on a test basis and were able to verify a certain level of effect in reducing our water consumption.
We will consider installing the taps at more kitchens across our Theme Parks.
