Celebrating Our 50th Anniversary

50 years since the establishment of Oriental Land Co., Ltd.

  • Oriental Land Co., Ltd. celebrated its 50th anniversary on July 11, 2010. Our many years of success have been made possible thanks to the generous and continuous support we have received from all of you. And so, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to you all. The starting point of our company goes back to the period when the Maihama area was still a part of the sea. The original concept was based on the dream we had at that time, “to show the wonderful world of the American Disneyland to the Japanese children.” For fifty years from the start of the company, we kept moving forward to pursue our dream in the midst of dramatic changes in Japan’s economic environment. First, we launched the reclamation work on the Urayasu district, which was succeeded by the opening of Tokyo Disneyland, leading up to the development of today’s Tokyo Disney Resort. Throughout the history of our company, we have consistently strived to provide a place in Japan filled with dreams and wonder, pursuing this goal through persistence and a willingness to explore and experiment. From the past, and into the future, our dream and core values remain unchanged. Each and every Oriental Land employee always keeps our founding principles to heart. We will listen to the advice of the stakeholders, strive to generate “happiness” for everyone, and provide a world filled with dreams and wonder to all. I would like to conclude by thanking you again, and asking you for your continued support for the Oriental Group in the fifty years ahead. Toshio Kagami Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, Oriental Land Co., Ltd.
  • Oriental Land Co., Ltd. is able to celebrate its 50th anniversary thanks to the understanding and support of everyone around us. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you. Oriental Land Co., Ltd. was founded fifty years ago with the following goals: to reclaim the offshore area of Urayasu City in Chiba Prefecture; to develop the land for commercial and residential use; and to construct a large-scale recreational facility in order to contribute to the culture, health and welfare of the people. Today, the company operates Tokyo Disney Resort, which includes two themed parks, that is visited every day by many Guests. We will not forget our heartfelt gratitude for the support we have received over the years, and will proceed into the future with a renewed sense of responsibility toward the continuation and development of our business. Over the coming years, we expect dynamic changes in the environment surrounding the Oriental Land Group as we experience increasing diversification in people’s lifestyles and values, as well as the aging of the Japanese population. We will face these changes, discerning without preconceptions what should and should not be changed, and developing new ideas and initiatives for the next fifty to a hundred years to come. Oriental Land Group companies will pursue their mission to create happiness and contentment by offering wonderful dreams and moving experiences based on original, imaginative ideas. • ”The first person who had the dream of bringing Disneyland to Japan was Chiharu Kawasaki, the first president of Oriental Land Company. This dream was born when Mr. Kawasaki went to Disneyland during a visit to the United States. There, he was filled with amazement as he experienced an amusement park like no other – a wonderful world created under the new concept of a “themed” park. Soon after his visit, he dreamed of bringing Disneyland to Japan, because he wanted all the children of Japan to experience such a world. When Oriental Land was founded, plans for creating Disneyland in Japan were far from being realized. It actually took more than twenty long years for Mr. Kawasaki to make his dream of opening Tokyo Disneyland come true. Oriental Land’s fifty years of history begins with the reclamation of the offshore area of Urayasu City, followed by the opening of Tokyo Disneyland, further extending into the development and opening of Tokyo DisneySea, and the expansion of Tokyo Disney Resort. We will look back into the past in a series of seven segments, by going through the various stages of the company’s history. 1.1960~1974 Beginning of the Oriental Land Co., Ltd. 2.1972~1980 Inviting Disneyland to Japan 3.1980~1983 Opening of Tokyo Disneyland 4.1983~2000 Growth of Tokyo Disneyland 5.1988~2001 Tokyo DisneySea Project 6.1994~2001 Development into Tokyo Disney Resort - New Upload - 7.2001~2010 Tokyo Disney Resort Today 1.1960~1974 Beginning of the Oriental Land Co., Ltd. 2.1972~1980 Inviting Disneyland to Japan 3.1980~1983 Opening of Tokyo Disneyland 4.1983~2000 Development of Tokyo Disneyland 5.1988~2001 Tokyo DisneySea Project 6.1994~2001 Development into Tokyo Disney Resort - New Upload - 7.2001~2010 Tokyo Disney Resort Today
